How to know it is time to seek support...

Continuing our Q&A series on Holistic Counselling, another question I get asked is…

“How do I know it is time to seek support?”

Many of my clients and the niche I work in have a common thread and that is an inner strength like no other…

This inner strength means a natural inkling to do things alone…

Do you find yourself doing everything yourself?

If you answered ‘YES’ to this question, welcome into the fold, you are very much like many of my clients, so you are not alone.

There are many reasons and causes that see you feeling the need to do everything for yourself.  One particular trend I have noticed is Independence as a trauma response, a learned behaviour from past experiences in an attempt to feel safe.

Good news though as it is a learned behaviour means it can be unlearned through healing and behaviour modification.

What are the signs it is time to seek support?

Something that I see in my clients is what I call empathy burnout and that is when you are either at or past your capacity…

Each of us only has so much capacity within us to fulfill our duties here on the earthly plane and when that capacity is filled up only with the needs of others, you will experience some or all of the following:

  • Anxiety
  • Overwhelm
  • High stress
  • Exhaustion
  • Lack of sleep
  • Feeling reactive
  • Dysregulated and heightened emotions

These symptoms are a sign from your body that you are at your limit and your turn to seek support…

Your capacity is full and overflowing…

What it overflows with is a diminished capacity to cope with even the smallest of things, nevermind any significant challenges that cross your path.

What seeking support can look like...

Seek support

Seeking out support whilst not an easy task is one you absolutely deserve to undertake and may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Calm
  • Resilience
  • Increased capacity
  • Increased energy
  • Improved sleep
  • Regulated emotions
  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Increased periods of peace and serenity

These symptoms are a sign from your body that you have expanded your capacity.

Your capacity has expanded and is now overflowing with supportive feelings

What it overflows with is an increased capacity to cope with even the biggest challenges that cross your path.

Let me leave you with a question to ponder….

“Which symptoms do I want to experience, those caused by diminished capacity or expanded capacity?”
