My role as a Special Needs Mum

It was the year 2014 and our whole world was turned upside down, both of our girls experienced traumatic medical events and as their mum I was dealing with it all.

I want to preface this with both of our girls are now young adults and are healthy and thriving.

The experience of being the witness to your child lying in a hospital bed is very harrowing and you experience such a roller coaster of emotions, never mind both children within the same year.

My story

As many mums do we get on with the job, making sure that everyone is taken care of and have everything they need both physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

As I soon came to realise whilst I was on guard and watching everyone else, ensuring there wasn’t a need that went unmet.  Who was watching me?

You guessed it – no-one – I was going along our tumultuous journey unchecked.  Now don’t get me wrong my husband is amazing and was always checking on me, but I was a superstar at the “I am fines”.

Fast forward three years and many ambulance rides, hospital stays and specialist visits, meantime I am still running on fumes going unchecked, my body decided enough was enough.

I was experiencing anxiety, high stress levels which caused off the chart cortisol levels (stress hormone), adrenal fatigue, reduced liver and kidney function.

A wake up call of all wake up calls, not much stops us as mums does it?  Our health is always something that puts us on notice, that we need to start to direct some of that attention back on ourselves.

What was I to do? My kids were still suffering not back to full health, they still needed my undivided attention.  A visit to the doctor provided a little help but not anything that was going to provide me with longevity.

A search for something else that was missing in my life actually provided the answer I didn’t know I was looking for.  As a carer to your children on top of being their mum takes alot of time and energy, but I knew it couldn’t be everything.

I needed something outside of my children, something that would provide fulfillment and maybe a little bit of respite.  Due to my experience I knew there was a need of support for Mums of children with additional needs and before I knew it I was studying the Diploma of Counselling and EFT Tapping alongside each other.

EFT Tapping was like the magical solution I had been praying for.  Right at the tip of my fingers I had the answer to my woes, to the high stress, anxiety, tiredness and exhaustion, adrenal fatigue and off the chart cortisol levels.

As I started to tap every day, my stress levels came down, my anxiety reduced and I started to feel more energised.  I remember thinking to myself this can’t be real, how can tapping on my face and upper body be providing such relief.

But it was and I have to tell you all these years later I still get surprised at the magical results I see each and every day both in myself and my clients.

I had stumbled across the solution that would allow me to become a very calm, in control mum and carer for my girls and in addition armed with such a powerful technique to support my clients as well.
